The Internet Show Singapore 2010

April 23rd, 2010

The Singapore’s Internet Show, also called ‘Asia’s Only Internet Business Event’ was held in Suntec, Singapore from 21 to 22 of April. As a tech-savvy company itself, Exabytes was eager to join and witness this long-awaited event to see what the show had to offer and teach about doing business online.

Indeed, the participation experience was all together different from the Malaysia’s Internet Exhibition. The Singapore’s Internet Show was more focused on the crowd of working people and entrepreneurs. As this was our very first time attending the show, I found that this year’s theme focus more on encouraging business owner to advertise their businesses online.

From my personal perspective, if you were looking for ways to promote your businesses this was probably the best place to shop at as the exhibitors here had so much to offer and the services and advice they gave were extremely comprehensive. These ranged from helping you to find the most suitable name, hosting and payment gateway to suit your business to helping you advertise your business online. Furthermore, you could find big industry players like Webvision, Readyspace, Purpleclick, PayPal, GT-Pay, ip-mirror, 1-net Singapore, Mediaco (online marketing), Singtel among others.

Moreover, there were 45 FREE educational seminars running over the two days of the show. The experience with the seminars were fascinating. The presentations were a lot to like as they offered participants great tips and tricks which help to promote businesses effectively.

Here are some snapshots taken at the Internet Show.

Share your experience with us if you happen to be there in this event as well.

Rasa Sayang Makan-Makan Trip

April 22nd, 2010

8th April 2010, 7pm. The breeze was cold and the sun had set, 43 Exabees (Exabtyes’ emplyees aka the big family of Exabytes) with empty stomach, some insisting on wearing their very loose pants, were heading to the palace of food, Spice Market Cafe in Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Batu Ferringhi.

Sorry if all these sound a bit exaggerating, but we certainly were excited to satisfy our palate and hunger with more than a hundred varieties of foods served at the International Buffet of Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa.

In fact, besides being a food escapade for many of us, this buffet dining among Exabees is a celebration of the completion of server migration from TMNet Data Center and AIMS Data Center in Cyberjaya to AIMS Data Center KL. Moreover, it is also to reward the great effort put in by all staff members especially the technical staff who had to endure many sleepless nights in KL.

Indeed, this round of server migration was relatively a long process which stretched over 4 months (started December 2009 and completed in March 2010). The server migration process wouldn’t have been a success if it had not been for the good team work of Exabees who worked hand-in-hand to provide support directly or indirectly to our valued customers before and after the migration period.

Not forgetting the immense patience our clients have shown us, we at Exabytes would like to extend our gratitude for your kind understanding and cooperation. Our apologies if the migration has caused any inconvenience to you.

Besides, we would also like to say thank you to all data center staff (TMNet DC Cyberjaya, AIMS DC Cyberjaya) who assisted us in ensuring a smooth process of migration throughout this period of time.

Yet, there is another reason to celebrate! As March 2010 marked the closing of our financial year 2009, with all the continuous support from our loyal customers, we had again exceeded the revenue target set for this month.

In all sincerity, we want to thank our clients again for continuously renewing their hosting services with us and keep recommending new clients to Exabytes. We couldn’t have maintained as the No.1 Hosting Provider in Malaysia without you!

While devouring the best food in such a great variety, we didn’t forget to take a few snapshots of us at the restaurant to make our KL support team who were still working at that hour jeolous.

Delicious Looking Chocolate Fountain

Fish Roe in Sweet Tofu Skin Sushi

Lamb Shoulder Cooked with Chili and Spices

‘Surrounding’ the Chocolate Fountain

Lastly – ‘Orang Asli’ eating style Exabee – EK Lim

Sorry our KL team, for not waiting for you guys, but we simply couldn’t help it! :)
We know that you were working hard in KL, giving support to our valued clients. Don’t worry ya, next weekend is your turn to celebrate, while making us envious here in Penang. :(
Stay tuned for more interesting celebration pictures from KL!

March 2010 Employee of The Month!

April 13th, 2010

Hello and attention all! The time has come again, and it is the time that you’ve all been waiting for – the announcement of the new Exabytes’ Employee of The Month!

Before we reveal the big secret, we gonna keep you in suspense and let’s see if you could figure out who the big star is for this month.

He is a Martian sitting on the second floor in the office. Highly composed and almost always carries a poker face when he is in front of a computer, he seems cold, unhelpful and always hiding himself in the corner. Immensely focused on his work, his eyes exude the highest power of concentration you have ever seen. Yet it doesn’t mean he has the typical piercing eagle eyes. In fact, he appears most composed when he is in deep thought.

But we assure you that you will certainly be greatly surprised if you take the initiative to talk to him!! From someone with emotionless facial expression, he will turn to a smiling good Samaritan grinning to you and enthusiastically ask if you need any help. And if you throw him a question on programming, he will explain to you with great zeal and patience, readily answer a few more of them even sometimes they sound really simple to him.

His 100% commitment to his work has earned him this award the second time in 6 months! With much anticipation, who else can it be?

This man is no other than our R&D Software Engineer, Chris Lee!

So what makes this man so special? Let’s check it out!

  • Shows 100% commitment to his work
  • Willing to work overtime to solve problems
  • His ability to follow up on issues closely
  • Extremely helpful with other team members (within or cross department)
  • Loves to share his knowledge with peers around him.

Congratulations to our reigning king of the month, Chris Lee, Exabytes’ R&D Software Engineer!

Right on! Chris

Employee of the Month

Exclusive Interview with CEO Chan Kee Siak from TheEDGE

April 9th, 2010

blog-theedge-interview

“Innovation is not limited to products. You may have a commoditized product, but you can have innovation in terms of marketing, packaging and customer experience.” Chan Kee Siak, CEO of Exabytes was quoted as saying when he was interviewed by TheEdge, one of the most notable business magazines in Malaysia a couple of months ago.

Started as a part-time reseller named hostkaki.com, the then 19-year-old Chan was a student of Business Information Systems at the Penang branch of Tunku Abdul Rahman College. Juggling a part-time business with studies was tough, especially the time when the business of hostkaki.com began to take off. “At first I skipped lectures and later on, I skipped tutorials. In the end, I even had to skip exams due to the overwhelming response from my clients.”

The decision he had to make was clear: either quit the business or quit his studies. He decided to quit his studies after one year. “I decided to give myself one year to fully concentrate on the business. I managed to convince my parents that if the business failed, I would go back to college.”

Ever since Exabytes became a web-hosting provider from a hosting reseller, the company has been self-funded from its operations. “We managed to break even in the first year of business,” said Chan, attributing his success to plenty of hard work and perseverance.

According to him, there is nothing special about web-hosting and there are many web-hosting providers locally and around the world. “What’s different is marketing and packaging of the product, as well as the way clients are treated. We don’t have salespeople who do door-to-door sales; we don’t meet our customers at their office. All sales are done over the Internet. And this has helped us reduce cost and enable us to pass the saving back to our customers.”

Indeed, Exabytes prides itself on its customer service and support. While most web-hosting providers have more salespeople than support personnel, 3 out of 5 Exabytes employees are in customer service and support team, which provides round-the-clock technical assistance through Helpdesk.

Talking about the quality of the product, Chan stressed that the reliability of Exabytes’ servers is something that cannot be compromised. While the industry’s server average uptime is 99.5%, average uptime for websites hosted by Exabytes is 99.9%. “We are very careful in selecting our suppliers, such as server hardware suppliers and Internet bandwidth suppliers. We also have a team of dedicated server engineers who understand servers and customers’ needs,” says Chan.

Exabytes, which obtained MSC status in 2005, also runs regular preventive maintenance and maintain backups to ensure a high level of server availability. Almost half its hard drive storage capacity is used for the backups.

In 2009, Exabytes was ranked No 370 in the Deloitte Technology Fast500 Asia Pacific Ranking. “Our growth is due to our strong customer base of 32,000, many of whom are SMEs. Our clients in Malaysia include Bonia, Carlsberg, Celebrity Fitness and Lim Kok Wing University. Read more.

Currently having 9000 international clients, Exabytes plans to acquire more overseas clients this year, while increasing its market share in Malaysia. “Our goal is that every business in Malaysia should own a website,” said the visionary CEO/founder of Exabytes.
