Have you ever received a call from someone from Exabytes who had the gentlest and most polite voice that would almost melt your heart? Have you ever come across someone who has the patience to make more than 80 telephone calls in a day just to remind her customers with her sweetest voice ever? This super polite, super dedicated and super patient person is Exabytes’ EOTM of September 2011! Instead of giving you the hints to who the person was, this time we are going to make the guessing easier by telling you that it was a she from our Customer Service Department.

She is that kind of person who is friendly and approachable to everyone. She is very sociable and affable, but can be rather quiet sometimes. Her hobby and ‘vision’ are to try out all the delicious food in the world she can find. At work, she is the expert who handles all billing related enquiries of our customers. When calling our customers, the tone of her voice will never change even when she is making the 80th call of the day just to inform our customers about their billing matters.

Without further ado, let’s put our hands together for Exabytes’ billing analyst, Ms Selin Lau! In September, Siew Ling stood out from the crowd because of her selfless dedication and her much applauded working attitude as follows:

always takes the initiative to work overtime to make calls to customers on our invoice list

is highly responsible for payment follow-ups with clients

possesses great learning attitude

is kind and friendly

is extremely patient and dedicated at work

Congratulations Selin, you are officially the star of September!!

CEO of Exabytes, Mr. Chan Kee Siak has once again appeared in an interview with The Edge, the highly popular and noted business magazine of Malaysia to share his insights into eCommerce and his e-entrepreneurial journey which started when he was at the tender age of 19.

Commanding 21% of market share in Malaysia and serves over 50,000 customers in 121 countries, Exabytes Network was founded by Chan back then when he was still enrolled in Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC). The hardworking chap sold computer hardware and helped customers to design their websites to earn some extra pocket money before he discovered the potential market of web hosting in Malaysia. “Back then, the Internet was a very new thing and there were very few players offering hosting in Malaysia,” Chan said.

Chan’s first 100% online based business started by the name of hostkaki.com, which was later changed to Exabytes Network when Chan decided to drop out of TAR College and fully concentrate on his online web hosting business. Described by Chan as “a once in a lifetime opportunity”, business of Exabytes had since tripled and quickly expanded from reselling to buying its own servers and renting then out to clients.

When asked about how could Malaysia emerge from the stiff competition around the globe in the technology and online industry, Chan indicated Malaysia’s greatest advantage was that majority of Malaysians could speak at least 2-3 different languages. Indeed, the success story of Exabytes was full of challenges. In early days, the biggest challenge faced by Exabytes was manpower as web hosting was still very new and many Malaysians did not have the relevant skills and needed to be trained. As a technie, Chan also admitted that he did not have the aptitude for bookkeeping. “I think this is a common situation faced by most technopreneurs. I simply outsourced my company accounts for the first 6-7 years. As a result, I didn’t have a good idea of the exact financial position of the company. The consequence was that I lost out on opportunities and reduced the company’s potential. But of course now, we have someone in charge of overseeing the company’s finances,” recalls Chan.

Chan’s advice to newbies who just ventured into the technology and online business was that investors should focus their spending on the core business activities instead of investing heavily on furniture, nice office and cars to keep their start-up costs low.

Today, Chan runs a very creative and dynamic company to accommodate the current generation employees who prioritize job satisfaction over wages. Like other establishments, Exabytes must continue to grow to stay profitable. “The future is with cloud hosting. Everything can be hosted online such as your accounting software. Companies need not install the software on their computer to use the application anymore,” Chan was quoted as saying. He then added that Exabytes hoped to expand to nearby countries in the future and at the same time continue to maintain its position as a market leader. Seeing Singapore as a strong competitor, Exabytes established a Singapore based subsidiary few years ago to compete with it more effectively.

Also having many years of experience in serving overseas clients especially from North America, Chan indicated that the growth of web hosting has been rather stagnant in the past years in the US and Europe hence many overseas competitors have already landed in Asean. As Malaysia is stable both politically and economically in the region, many overseas players have chosen Malaysia and Singapore as their primary target markets in the region. Besides, the boom of mobile applications is also increasing the demand for web content which then boosts the demand for web hosting.

When asked about the current global economic slump, Chan was optimistic that it would instead create more opportunity for Exabytes. “When many employees were retrenched and couldn’t find a job, they needed to fund income and the online business model is one of the best choices as it requires only minimum business setup costs, operation costs, etc.”

In fact, CEO Chan has been busy giving speeches at different venues such as seminars and universities in these few years. We believe that his interview with The Edge would be another piece of great advice and inspiration to many rising entrepreneurs.

Time flies, as the month of July was wrapped up in the midst of numerous meetings and new product and promotion launches, a star was born in the month of August, our Employee of the Month for August 2011. But before we reveal the big secret, let’s give you our valued blog follower a hint or two about our hero of the month!

First, he is a frequent gym-goer with a muscular body. Second he makes his iphone his best mate to the extent that he sleeps with it and eats with it. Third, his favourite pastime is watching Japanese anime movies, English drama series and listening to Japanese songs even he doesn’t understand a word of it. Fourth, according to some sources, he is often seen ‘drifting’ on the roads in his Toyota SEG. Fifth, he is a friendly person who is approachable and helpful to anyone around him.

Without further delay, let’s give a big round of applause to Level 1 Software Engineer, Rick Toh Eng Chun!! However, Rick wasn’t selected as EOTM of August because of his drifting skills or his liking for his iphone. Instead, he was chosen because of his good working attitude and selfless dedication as follows:

Takes the initiative to solve client issues

Good working attitude

Eager and willing to learn, friendly

Assists clients well and is highly responsible for follow-ups of client issues until resolved

Completes task assigned to him on time

Congratulations Rick, keep up the good work!

Deepavali or Diwali, the festival of lights and the most important festival widely celebrated by Hindus and Indians in numerous countries, is the day when oil lamps are lighted up to thank the gods for the happiness, peace, knowledge and wealth that the Hindus and Indians have received.

While Deepavali or Diwali is celebrated with lots of open houses and jovial savoring of mouth-watering cuisine and delicacies in Malaysia, on a more spiritual level, it is actually the celebration of the inner light that lightens up one’s mind and burns away ego, anger and greed.

In this special October, we at Exabytes wish all Hindus and Indians a Happy Deepavali, and everybody a Happy Holiday!

In conjunction of this celebration, our office will be closed on 26 October 2011 and resume operation on 27 October 2011. In case you require any technical assistance, don’t worry, as our professional technical staff will still be working 24×7 to assist you day and night.

Our EOTM of July 2011, is a very shy person who speaks only when is spoken. A quiet person by nature, he usually carries a smile on his face and is very friendly and helpful to colleagues. At work, our July Star is a senior software engineer who believes that one must always have the passion and urge to continuously upgrade his skills and know-how in order to excel in technical related jobs. Apart from this, he has the reputation for not only giving the best advice to clients, but also flexible and alternative solutions to act in unexpected circumstances.

Despite his even-tempered personality, our July EOTM is also highly ‘joke tolerant’. You can make jokes and poke fun at him but rest assured that he will still carry a smiling face. So as time passes, no one in the office wants to make fun of him anymore. Oh by the way, our Mr. Shy Guy has recently been promoted to Level 3 Support System Engineer.

With all the hints given out, have you already got some ideas who this special person is? If you haven’t, let me tell you that he is also a member of the OC of the recent Exabytes’ team building trip at Pantai Kerachut who did a great job in making the event a very successful and enjoyable one.

So, without further suspense, let’s give a big round of applause to our software engineer, Mr. KC Yeap!!

KC beat the rest of us in the office last July by:

taking full responsibility and being highly efficient in the tasks assigned to him

doing a great job organizing Exabytes’ team building at Pantai Kerachut

being punctual all the time

being extremely helpful in giving guidance to juniors regarding any technical issue

assisting to solve customer issues outside working hours

Once again, congratulations KC!
