June 2010 Employee of The Month!

July 9th, 2010

The time has come and we are very excited to announce our EOTM for the month of June! This month’s EOTM is special to us and probably to a lot of Exabytes’ clients as he is the person who you see every time you click on the link to send us a helpdesk ticket. You will also see his face elsewhere such as on our VPS (Windows Private Server) web page and Business Web Hosting page, etc. In fact, his face is EVERYWHERE! According to the management, he was picked because of his extremely pleasant, helpful and approachable look. Believe it or not, this guy is also one of the most affable guys I’ve ever met in all my encounters. No matter he is free or super busy at work, he is always smiling to me whenever we meet.

However, this month, he is voted our EOTM not because of his look, not only because of his amiable smile, but more importantly, his great contribution and selfless dedication to the company recently.

Let’s put our hands together for the friendly face you always see in our side banner ‘Live Chat with Sales and Tech’, our technical engineer, MR Gaveen Khor!

Reasons he is voted our EOTM for June:

  • Taking ownership of various issues and putting extra efforts during on and off duty hours to satisfy clients’ needs and resolve their issues to prevent service cancellation. His efforts have increased the confidence level of many Exabytes’ clients in our services.
  • Always taking the initiative to follow up pending issues and complaints from time to time and make sure they are all resolved.
  • Taking full responsibility on the assigned tasks to resolve them on time, as well as handling well on researching, testing, and implementing new features of products.

By the way, Gaveen is also an avid filmmaker of short comedy-clips. He was among the last 10 finalists of ‘Cadbury Chocettes Small Doses of Happiness Championship’ last year and many other funny and humorous short-clip making competitions. Best known for his ‘mou lei tao’ humor (Stephen Chow’s type of humor) in the office, he has never failed in making a lot of us laugh in the office.

Right on…! Gaveen

Financial Backbone of Exabytes – Our Finance Department

July 1st, 2010

This July, we are going to feature another department in Exabytes, as well as a special and important person behind it. Unlike the Customer Service Department which we presented to our readers on our blog last month (7 Adorable and Dedicated Angels Behind The Scene), this department only consists of 1 person. Yeah… make no mistake, there is only one person! But that certainly doesn’t make this department any less significant than other departments in Exabytes!

This long haired lass with an accountant look sits on the second floor of our office. Speaking of her nature of work, she is even more behind the scene than our ’7 Dedicated Angels’ in Customer Service Department for she doesn’t interact with any customer at all! Yet, she controls Exabytes’ financial pulse, monitors the company’s spending, and even gives the CEO her opinions and advice on all money related matters! Not only that, every single PO and single cent spent every day has no chance of escaping from her mighty eyes.

Yeah! Introducing our Finance Manager, Miss Siew Hoon. Ever since she joined the company, she has introduced several financial systems and plans which benefited the company greatly.

Siew Hoon, our Finance Manager

Siew Hoon, our Finance Manager is also a frequent visitor and keen shopper of Queensbay Mall, Penang. :-) Ask her the location of any shop in this massive shopping mall and she could tell you in no time as she knows them like the back of her hand. Frequency of visits: 7 times a week! But you could be terribly wrong if you think she is an extravagant shopper, for all she does in the mall was long hour window shopping! It’s never an easy task to convince her to part with her cash. And because of her thriftiness and perfect discipline with money, all of us at Exabytes have trust and faith in her for managing and spending our money wisely. :-)

At work, she is very sensitive to numbers and possesses an analytic mind. She places accountability as the most important attribute in her profession.

Last but not least, (someone has divulged this information to us) despite the sedentary nature of her job and her habit of eating around the clock, she never gets fat. Man! This is already making a lot of us jealous.

7 Adorable and Dedicated Angels Behind The Scene

June 16th, 2010

Exabytes' Angels

2010 marks the 9th year of Exabytes since it was founded back then in 2001 by our CEO Chan Kee Siak. Nine years after the inception, we are still strong and solid as ever, thanks to all the fantastic support given to us by our customers!

Today, Exabytes consists of 52 members of staff and 7 departments. As our loyal customers, have you ever wondered who are behind the scene all these years, giving you various support 24*7 via email and phone?

With much anticipation and surprises, we want to dissect the Exabytes you know in front of you and give you a full introduction as to who and who are behind the scene of Exabytes.

Well, since there are quite a number of departments in the company, this month, allow us to start with…..

There is one special department at Exabytes, in which the staff spend half of their time puffing their noses and eating junk food and other sweet sweet confectionary. And when they are having their daily favorite feast or discussing fashion or beauty or something unrelated to work in the office (luckily outside office hours), no Martians dare to step into their territory as their place exudes too much of feminism vibe which would simply expel a Martian without much effort.

This department consists of 7 fine ladies (or Venusians), and NO single Martian. And in this small tiny version of the planet Venus in our Solar System, lives an ‘iron lady’ who would fight for food, protect her citizens (although there are only 6 citizens on this planet Venus), and step forward if she detects threats or invasions of any kind. Yeah… she is no other than the HEAD of CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT, Miss Annie Ong!

Annie Ong, the chief of the Customer Service Department or more precisely known as the Customer Service Manager.

No one on this planet dares to ask her to ‘mind her own business’, as her major duty is to ‘mind everybody’s businesses’ in the Customer Service Department. Her duty as a Customer Service Manager includes overseeing the operation of the whole department, checking if all the tasks assigned to her fellow Venusians are completed on time and bringing food to reward them when overtime work is needed.

A Rags to Riches Story

June 8th, 2010

CEO of Exabytes, Chan Kee Siak or more warmly known as ‘Ah Chan’ by his fellow colleagues and friends, has recently appeared in one of the most renowned local newspapers, Malaysia SME to talk about his dreams and how he started off as a 19-year-old enterprising lad from Penang and a college dropout from Tunku Abdul Rahman College.

With the current Exabytes serving more than 32,000 clients from both Malaysia and overseas and generating RM8.5 million revenue yearly, Chan has more to tell than all these commendable numbers.

It all started off back then when he was just a helper at his father’s Koay Teow T’ng stall in Penang. When he was young, he didn’t have the slightest idea that he would be a businessman one day. “During my younger days, I never thought of being a businessman or having my own business. It just came rather naturally with each step I took along the way. Maybe because from young I had helped out at the stall, I was exposed to handling money and communicating with customers.” Chan was quoted as saying.

His first year at college was not a ‘honeymoon year’ as deemed by many. Instead of enjoying his first college year, Chan sold and repaired computers while dabbling in website design. He soon realized the difficulty in finding reliable and specialized web hosting service providers in Malaysia.

At merely 19, he knew that he had to seize the opportunity before someone else saw it. Chan’s very first office was his bedroom, but it didn’t take long for him to turn his bedroom operation business to the largest hosting provider in Malaysia before went on to receive MSC status in 2005.

Recalling his tough old days, Chan couldn’t help but remembering all the uncertainties and dilemmas he felt back in college. “At first I skipped lectures and later on, I skipped tutorials. In the end, I even had to skip exams due to the overwhelming response from my clients.”

The decision he had to make was clear: either quit the business or quit his studies. He decided to quit his studies after one year. “I decided to give myself one year to fully concentrate on the business. I managed to convince my parents that if the business failed, I would go back to college.”

Today, with average business growth of over 20% annually, Exabytes has 55 staff members in Penang and KL offices and servers located in both Denver, Colorado USA and Cybercity in Malaysia.

Chan’s next challenge is to lead the company to become a globally managed one with more consideration for better working procedures and proper financial management.

For now, Exabytes is not looking at other forms of IT businesses as they intend to focus primarily on web hosting. However, while the team are kept busy updating themselves with the latest tools and technology pertaining to web hosting, they are exploring various applications that could add value to their customer hosting plans, including Online HR Management Systems for SMEs who want a cost effective way to handle their payroll and basic HR operations, as well as the recently developed Online Marathon Management System for the Penang Bridge Marathon.

To the soft-spoken yet highly ambitious Chan, his dream is to make EXABYTES a multinational IT conglomerate one day.

Price Increase on Top-Level Domain Name

June 2nd, 2010

This coming 1 July 2010, Verisign will increase registry fee for Top-Level domain names by 7% for .com and by 10% for .net domain names. This is indeed a shocking news to the Internet world as it might affect everyone including Exabytes. Due to this fee increase, it might also affect us in giving our customers special promotion prices for .com and .net domains.

Previously in 2008, there was a 7% increase in the registry fee of .com domains and 10% in .net domains.  However, Exabytes still continued to provide the same price for these two domain extensions.

Today in 2010, even though Verisign has increased the registry fee again for .com and .net domains for another 7% and 10%, our domain normal price and the renewal fees paid by our existing customers will still NOT be increased.

To all customers, if you own free hosting accounts or free blogs and do not have a domain name, NOW is the right time for you to get one as we are currently having a special promotion for TLDs (Top-Level Domain Names)!!!

For those who already owned a domain, however if you feel the need to get another one or several to start your new websites or online business, I would suggest that you get them now in this month. Also to anyone out there who would like to own their domain names with different extension domain names for example spaxez.com, spaxez.net, spaxes.info; it is HIGH TIME for you to GRAB ONE NOW.

Exabytes would also like to take this opportunity to present a special offer to those who are interested to transfer their domains to Exabytes. GREAT DISCOUNTS and special goodies await you as we are currently running a special DOMAIN TRANSFER PROMOTION!!! Contact our salespersons NOW to find out more!

Check out every Exabytes website, we do have different domain promotions going on for different products and services.  Please ACT FAST AND GRAB ONE NOW before our promotion ends 30 June 2010!

May 2010 Employee of The Month!

May 29th, 2010

Lately, there is one little angel in the office who flies from here to there to work extra hard to compensate for the work left by her fellow colleagues who are on leave or absent for some reason. She wouldn’t mind lending an extra hand, although it means working longer hours and staying in the office after everyone has left.

This walking angel in our office is extroverted, cheerful and highly sociable. An optimistic person, her bubbly and easy-to-make-friends personality has always filled up the office with laughter. Downright extroverted, she enjoys adventurous and extremely demanding outdoor activities even some guys might shrink from.

Speaking of this, does anyone know that she has conquered the great Mount Kinabalu in Sabah? :-) Just like how she approaches all her favourite exciting outdoor activities, she is greatly independent when it concerns work. Not only that, she handles all the incoming complaints with professional grace and whenever she is asked to help, she always assists her team members wholeheartedly.

So who is this special lady and why are we describing her in such a great length here? :-)

Well, well, well… As a company which truly appreciates and values hard work, responsibility and intense dedication, this lady is definitely worth mentioning! And because of all that wonderful attributes and selfless hard work she puts in, she is officially voted as our EOTM for May 2010!!!

Announcing our EOTM for May 2010, Miss Tan Chia Ying!!!

Reasons she was voted as our EOTM for May 2010:

• Handles the whole Customer Service Department when her fellow colleagues Sharon and Sau Hun were on leave
• Works independently
• Handles complaints and assist team members well
• Friendly and helpful
• Works overtime

Exabytes Employee of the month chia ying

Congratulations Chia Ying! We are proud of you not only because you have conquered Mount Kinabalu (which a lot of us haven’t got the chance/guts to do it yet), but also your self-sacrificing spirit at work!
